We have the year 2016, nervously I’m refreshing the Instagram page of the Australian Hair Fashion Award.
Every minute now, they will announce the finalists.
Refresh.
Refresh.
Then it loads.
First the girls, several different categories of them, but then the male category comes next.
I see my picture. Time to celebrate!
The Australian Hair Fashion Award 2016 was definitely something that kick-started my career, my name was out there and so was my face.
But what exactly is hair fashion? Let me try to tell you what I learned.
So what is hair fashion?
In everyday life, hair fashion is as simple as braiding your hair or slicking it back, wearing it in a ponytail, etc.
Essentially, as soon as you alter your hair in any form or shape, it counts as hair fashion.
But we are not here to talk about how you style your hair in the morning, are we?
We are here to talk about perfection, to create a look that makes your jaw drop and you think WOW!
We are talking about several hours of styling only to take a picture of it or to walk on a runway.
Hair fashion is as extravagant as high fashion can be and often goes hand in hand.
But we are here to take a close look at hair fashion for men and leave the super avant-grade looking side of things out for now.
When I was part of the Australian Hair Fashion Award, styled by Stefano Silvestri my hair looked like this:
Still normal enough to be worn outside but let me tell you: every single hair had its proposed place.
Stefano Silvestri planned my hair out perfectly and knew where he wanted it exactly. Before our shoot date, I had to come into his hair salon where he already pre-styled my hair.
He trimmed it a bit and had a look at how he could achieve his vision. On the day of the shoot, he styled my hair for almost 2 hours before it was ready to be photographed.
And every time my hair would only slightly fall out of place he jumped in and used more hairspray to fixate it.
Hair fashion is a tough job to model for as you not only have to worry about the modeling part itself, but you also need to display the hair from it’s best side while keeping everything in place.
Anyway, after shooting for another hour, we had pictures that matched the hairdresser’s vision and my job was done. We also did another style together, one with my hair open:
So, what should you take from this?
Now, what my experience in this field taught me is that hair fashion is a really widespread topic.
I already mentioned this at the beginning of this article, but it is so true.
Hair fashion starts with any form of haircut or styling and essentially has no end.
As a model, this opens a completely new field to explore and to learn about, and it definitely made me realize how much work there is involved in hair.
It made me appreciate the hard work of hairdressers even more. And I surely see them now in a different light now.
I still check up on the Australian Hair Fashion Award every year to see what the up and coming hairstyles might be.
So if you want to be always on top of the newest trends, why won’t you also check up on the fashion hair awards around the world to see what kind of hairstyle might be the newest go to?
